Hello Tel!
If you’re in the market for a website, and need a new web address (a.k.a domain name) then you might be interested in a new suffix, that will be available in a few weeks time. From 3rd December, trademark owners will be able to apply for a website address ending with .tel e.g. mycompanywebsite.tel
General applications (for businesses without registered trademarks) will be processed from 3rd February 2009. The .tel domains are aimed at businesses who simply need a contact page website that can easily be viewed on mobile devices, without the need to build or host a site.
You can learn more about .tel domains (and watch an introductory video) at the Telnic website.
Home shopping to account for a third of all sales
You will undoubdtedly be aware of the increase in ‘internet shopping’ over the last 12 months or so. Unsurprisingly this trend is set to continue, with market researchers Key Note predicting around 30% of all future UK purchases to be made at home.
This represents a massive change in consumer spending patterns, and will affect retailers and manufacturers within a very short time frame.
All elements of the ‘marketing mix’ (product, price, place, promotion) will require review. For example, ‘on shelf’ presence is currently important for brands within a store, but how will this translate to presence on a retailer website?
Brands will undoubtedly need to focus more on internet shoppers, and may even need to completely change their packaging to adapt for delivery to the individual home.
If you haven’t yet considered the impact on your business, then it’s probably time you did! Thankfully, here at blue sky, we are experts in both retail and the web. If you would like to discuss how your brand can adapt to changing consumer behaviour, we’d be only too happy to help.

YouTube quiz
Here’s a bit of Friday fun…
What do you think is currently one of the most viewed clips on YouTube?
A campaign against the continued occupation of Iraq?
A speech by Hilary Clinton?
A free Tibet campaign by the Dalai Lama?
Actually, it’s none of the above! Surprisingly enough, it’s a short clip about the UK’s new space agency (UKSA) and their new rocket launcher (currently being built in Cumbria). Click here to view the clip.

OK, so we may not have been entirely honest about the contents of that clip (as far as we know, there’s no such thing as UKSA!). We’ve instead just engaged you in a new internet phenomenon called ‘rickrolling’… where users are directed to a video clip of Rick Astley instead of whatever they were expecting (we hope you liked the video by the way).
Simply search for ‘Rick Astely’ in Youtube, and you will see that his videos are currently attracting (literally) millions of hits. Whilst this might just be a ‘fad’ it further demonstrates the power of the internet… and just how quickly a trend can spread.
Whilst no product is being promoted in this instance, we’re pretty sure Mr Astley can expect an increase in royalties over the next few months!
