It’s nearly Christmas!

We’ve been resisting it for weeks, but since we’re nearly half way through November… we’ve finally succumbed to thinking about buying Christmas presents. As such, we really like this heartwarming TV ad’ from John Lewis.

Whodunnit?

See if you can guess what the ad below is for.
We won’t spoil it by telling you the answer, suffice to say we think it a highly effective piece of creative.

Friday fun – guess the brand

See if you can guess the name of the manufacturer in this new car ad.

Clearly there is a bold statement being made here. We’re not convinced that audiences will buy into the message however. Worse still, does the ad’ have a disappointing ending, which simply re-enforces a negative stereotype about the product in question? Only time will tell.

New Cadbury TV ad

We’re not sure what we think to this new TV ad from Cadbury (the follow up to the ‘Gorilla’ campaign)… suffice to say, it might explain some of the missing luggage at Heathrow’s new Terminal!

Carlton Draught TV ad

We’ve been posting quite a lot of TV ads recently, but we came across this one for Cartlon Draught (an Australian beer) and couldn’t resist including it. The ’slapstick’ style reminds us of some of the Carling Black Label Ads of the 1980’s , but when it comes to beer, we think the use of humour is still a great formula. The only criticism we might level, is that the ad may suffer from early ‘wear out’… consumers get bored very easily these days, and it is sometimes more effective to produce a variety of smaller ads along the same theme, rather than one ‘big hitter’.

Spoof TV Ads

They say ‘imitation is the sincerest form of flattery‘. Sometimes this can be a risky strategy for a brand, but we think the two examples below (one new, one old) do the job extremely well. Not only do these commercials build on the awareness of an existing campaign, but they re-enforce the ‘cheeky’ positioning of the brands in question. If you haven’t yet seen these ads, we won’t spoil the ending by telling you which products they’re promoting.

Tesco to launch ‘Dragons Den’ style TV program

dragons-den.jpg

Tesco is to launch a ‘Dragons Den’ style program on ‘five’ TV in February, in a drive to recruit new independent suppliers. According to Brand Republic:-

“The peak-time series, which begins on Five on 3 March, will follow the people behind the new brands as they go through a genuine pitch process to Tesco’s buyers. Although the supermarket said it did not commission the show, it is an attempt to help improve perceptions of the store and its attitude toward suppliers.”

This might offer a good insight in to the minds of Tesco buyers… we wait with anticipation.

Tide

It has been a couple of weeks since we saw this ad (which was broadcast during the US superbowl)… but we’ve shown it to a few clients who suggested we should include it in ‘Pick n Mix’.

We like the ad for a number of reasons:-

  • It’s different
  • It’s memorable
  • It’s clear what is being adveristed
  • It’s easy to relate to

We also like the interactive website which encourages user involvement www.mytalkingstain.com Overall we think it’s a well executed campaign… re-enforcing our view that the simplest ideas are often the best!
